Code Officer I

Position:  Code Officer I

Department:  Community Development and Planning

Salary:   $30,000 (Salary based on qualification and experience)

 

General Nature of Work:

Receives general supervision from the Building and Code Official

  • Inspects housing conditions for compliance with the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC)
  • Assists with the enforcement of other technical codes
  • Assists property owners with determining feasible ways of correcting housing deficiencies
  • Contacts property owners to encourage rehabilitation of properties
  • Makes inspections of work in progress to ensure conformance
  • Maintains detailed records and makes reports of inspections
  • Inspects the erection of signs for compliance
  • Investigates complaints with regard to zoning setback, etc.
  • Enforces the Nuisance Ordinance and the unsafe building abatement code
  • Makes court appearance when necessary
  • Checks contractors for proper licenses
  • Performs related tasks as assigned

 

Training and Experience

 Should be certified in building and one other inspection field such as electrical, gas, plumbing, HVAC, or IPMC.  Should have a thorough knowledge of all code requirements within areas of certification and state and City Ordinances.  Must be able to read plans and recognize deviations from such plans in the construction and installation process.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and property owners along with enforcing regulations and code requirements with tact and impartiality. Must have good oral/written communication skills and have the ability to communicate effectively with the public. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
