27 Jan, 2017The Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks & Recreation Department has selected Kevin Giddens as Athletic Coordinator. Giddens is filling the position vacated by the retirement of long time employee Lynn Bennett. Giddens began his work history working in ball field maintenance for the Douglas Recreation Department before receiving his Masters of Education degree in Health and Physical Education and subsequent Master of Education Specialists in Education Leadership and Supervision. He then moved into the public education field as a teacher, coach and administrator for the next 30 years.
“We are delighted to have Kevin Giddens’ coaching and leadership experience join our staff”, said Recreation Director Terry Peek. “His hiring is certainly going to help our staff make the transition between Athletic Coordinator’s as seamless as possible.”
Former Athletic Coordinator Lynn Bennett retired with over 40 years of service in the recreation profession including 12 years in Moultrie. Bennett’s duties included coordinating the girls’ softball, tee ball, girls’ basketball, flag football, and cheerleading programs.
According to Peek, “Lynn Bennett was a ‘walking encyclopedia’ of knowledge regarding the Georgia Recreation & Parks Association (GRPA) and other youth sports organizations.” Bennett’s knowledge of youth sports was accumulated over the years as he served in many leadership positions including GRPA State Athletic Committee, GRPA District Commissioner, South Georgia Junior Olympic Commissioner, State Junior Olympic Commissioner, and was in the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame as a coach and commissioner.
Giddens brings with him years of experience in coaching and athletic administration. He recently retired from the Colquitt County School System as Athletic Director. He has 26 years of coaching experience at the high school level that includes football, baseball, softball, and wrestling. Giddens served 6 years as Athletic Director for school sports between his time at Coffee County and Colquitt County. Additionally, he is very familiar with rule making and interpretation having served as Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Region 1-AAAAAA secretary for 13 years and on the Executive Committee for GHSA for 5 years.
Coach Giddens will begin immediately assisting with basketball supervision while he prepares to organize and coordinate the tee ball and girls softball programs that begin registration January 30.
